DISCOVERING EUROPE

In 2019 I did a 4861 km Expedition through Sweden’s 25 provinces. From the southernmost point to the northenmost point. In 2024 I want to step things up and do the same in Europe.

The purpose is to explore Europe; its nature, culture and adventure opportunities. It is also to inspire others who wishes to set out on greater adventures that can be reached by environmentally friendly transportation.

On the other side of the Atlantic there is a classic in long-distance hiking called “The Triple Crown of hiking“, which refers to the three major U.S. long-distance hiking trails; Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail and Appalachian Trail. During this Expedition I want to establish an European counterpart by hiking/skiing the classic “Norge på langs” (Norway from south to north), the newcomer HexaTrek and one of the world’s most famous hikes, the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. I will do all of these in one go, linked together by bicycle. I will start by North Cape and finish in Tarifa (the northernmost to the southernmost point of continental Europe).

The total distance of 10 000 km will take more than 10 months to complete.

Norge på langs

Lenght: ∼3000 km
Time: February – May
Way of travel: Back country skiing, hiking, trail running

A classic between Norway’s northernmost and southernmost point (North Cape to Lindesnes). The journey doesn’t follow a particular path, it is up to every hiker/skier to find the best possible route themself. Storms, darkness and tens of minus degrees celsius await here.

Hexatrek

Lenght: ∼3034 km
Time: June – September
Way of travel: Hiking, climbing

A future classic inaugurated in 2022. The route goes through France’s highest mountain regions: “l’Hexagone”, from the Vosges in the north via the Alps to the Pyrenees and the Atlantic coast. Passing 14 national parks, the trail will also ascend and descend a total of 136,000 meters of altitude.

One of the world’s most famous pilgrimages. Many routes lead to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, of which the “French Way” from St Jean Pied de Port via northern Spain is the most popular. The trail is declared the first “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” and attracts more than 200,000 pilgrims each year.

Santiago de Compostela – Tarifa, Spain: ∼1000 km

Behind the expedition

My name is Linda Åkerberg. I am a professional adventurer, mountain leader and outdoor communicator from Sweden. I set out on my first adventure in 2015 and since then I have, among other things, climbed peaks at around 6,000 meters, hiked through Himalayan jungles and completed the 4280 km Pacific Crest Trail. In 2019 I was named Adventurer of the Year for my 4861 km long adventure, by foot, bike and kayak through all of Sweden’s 25 provinces and in 2021 my book Expedition Sweden about the same trip was released.

Since 2016, I run the platform Wilderness Stories and work with producing inspiring material such as photos, text, film, lectures, etc.

With the Expedition, I want to explore Europe’s nature and culture. This by traveling solo, by my own power, through the continent’s different climate zones, nature types and cultures. From the Arctic climate in the North via lush beech forests and castle ruins in France to the Spanish desert and limestone cliffs on the Atlantic coast.

Like all journeys, this one is also an inner journey and the mental part of an adventures is something that has fascinated me for long. Along the way, I intend to seek answers to why some people (myself included) feel a constant attraction to the unknown. What makes an adventurer and what are the  forces behind? Is the adventure something that makes us feel better or are we running away from something? Based on myself and the people I meet, I will twist and turn these questions.

These topics will play a central role in the material that is produced and communicated throughout the Expedition.

Website

The site wilderness-stories.com/expeditioneuropa will be the base for the Expedition with all the information about it. There will be a live-updated map with current position, a news feed with updates from the trip, newspaper articles, links to the podcast episodes, etc.

podcast

Along the way I will record the podcast Expedition Europa and a new episode will be released every second week. In the episodes I will share my thoughts from the trail, but also have conversations with people I meet along the way. I want to highlight other outdoor enthusiasts and share their inspiring stories as well.

The adventure can of course be followed on my Instagram via daily updates with stories and posts.

The account currently has 15.5K followers and 25K exposures a week. Most are between 25-54 years old, 62% are women and 70% are from Sweden.

film

During the trip, a film will be produced together with the production company Moments Matter. The goal is for the film to be sold to one of the major TV channels in Sweden.

Book

The trip will also be an obvious sequel to my book Expedition Sverige which has been sold in thousands of copies. Just like in the first book, the reader gets to follow along on the journey and also take part of lots of outdoor knowledge as well as natural and cultural history.
